Unprecedented 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southern Philippines: USGS Updates

The Philippines’ Manila: The US Geological Survey reported that a powerful magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Friday, and local authorities issued a warning about possible damage.

The USGS said in a statement that no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake that occurred at 08:14 GMT off the coast of Sarangani province on Mindanao, the main southern island, at a depth of 78 kilometers (48 miles).

The earthquake was felt throughout a large portion of the mountainous island, though there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Keeshia Leyran, 27, told AFP from Davao City, roughly 200 kilometers from the epicentre, where she was attending a conference, “I think it was the strongest earthquake I’ve ever experienced.”

“Everyone around me was running outside in a panic. To be honest, I was more afraid of a stampede occurring because there are hundreds of people at the event.”

The Philippines, which is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic and volcanic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin, experiences earthquakes on a daily basis.
