When it comes to shopping on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the term “Black Friday” is most commonly associated with Philadelphia, where police had to deal with sizable crowds that flocked the city before the yearly Army-Navy game in order to take advantage of sales. The newsletter Public Relations News reported on December 18, 1961, that cops started calling post-Thanksgiving shopping days Black Friday and Black Saturday due to the headaches they caused.
